The B.A. in English Teaching leads to teacher certification in English Language Arts for grades 6-12 in the state of Idaho. It is possible to obtain teacher license reciprocity if you plan to move outside of Idaho after graduation.
The English Teaching program is a partnership between the English department and the College of Education. As an English major, you will take courses in linguistics, literature, and writing, as well as English teaching methods. You will also spend time taking courses in the College of Education and engaging in fieldwork in English Language Arts classrooms, which is coordinated by the division of Teacher Education.
The English Teaching program consists of three semesters:
- Block 1: early field placement
- Block 2: internship
- Block 3: student teaching
The B.A. in English Teaching includes the coursework and fieldwork listed below. Additionally, you must pass the Praxis II: English Language Arts: Content Knowledge (test# 5038) before the student teaching semester.

Student Teaching
During student teaching, you will gradually take over all responsibilities for classroom instruction. You will document some results of your teaching and your reflections about your teaching in a portfolio of work samples. In the end, the cooperating teacher writes a letter of evaluation that becomes the centerpiece of your job application file.
Earning a 6-12 Teaching Certificate in English
