Yookyung Lee, a Korean instructor at the Department of World Languages, founded and organized the annual Korean Speech contest. She selected students from the elementary Korean 102 and intermediate Korean 202 who participated and competed at the Seventh Korean Speech Contest at the Bergquist Lounge in the Student Union Building on April 26, 2024.
Haewon Cho, director of the Korean Language Program at the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations in University of Pennsylvania, Jae Hyeon Ryu, the former president of the Idaho Korean Association and a professor from the University of Idaho evaluated contestants and chose the six winners and four honorable mentions.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle has sponsored this event for three years with award certificates and cash prizes for the winners and all the participants. The Korean Club at Boise State University and Jason Herbeck, the Chair of the Department of World Languages, contribute to the event, too. The first place winners received the Award of the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle from Seo, Eunji. This time particularly, Kyungho Park, a Korean consul, attended and made an opening remark to celebrate the event.Â
