Portrait of Shoko Asay

Shoko Asay has taught for Boise State’s Department of World Languages for twelve years. She teaches the four-semester Japanese language sequence as well as Japanese Culture through Film, which is offered through the Department of World Languages and cross listed with both the Sociology, Communication and Theater, Film and Creative Writing departments. She also teaches Japanese 101 online.

Shoko brings native fluency in the language and deep cultural experience to the classroom. Not only do her students study the Japanese language, but she also provides opportunities for them to participate in exchange programs, the Japanese English Teaching program and helps to prepare her students for job interviews. Shoko enjoys the opportunity to create these learning experiences (for her students and herself). She says, “I love it when my students understand the learning materials in Japanese and find ways to apply them practically in real-world situations.”
