On Tuesday, October 22, we will update our Boise State WordPress environment to the new Gutenberg WordPress theme editor.
What to know
This is not a new theme; the look and feel of our websites will not change. What will change is how you will create new content and edit existing content.
The migration will happen in two stages
- Classic editor to Gutenberg editor migration. This will occur on October 22 for all sites. When this completes admins will notice the backend of all existing and new pages will use the latest version of the WordPress Gutenberg editor.
- Panels to Gutenberg “blocks” migration. This will be coordinated and scheduled with your site’s primary site admin in advance. When this completes admins will use blocks instead of panels, and panels will no longer function on your website.
Will anything happen to my current content, including tables and forms?
No. After the Gutenberg editor goes live on October 22 your content will still look the same to visitors, and your TablePress tables and Gravity Form data will not change.
Content migration
Until your panels are migrated to blocks, you will still see the classic editor and Panels will work as they do today. But any new pages and posts that you create will use the new Gutenberg editor and blocks; Panels will not work on these new pages and posts.
After your panels are migrated to blocks, you can only use the new theme editor to edit existing content. A new column will be added under Pages > All Pages that indicates whether a page is using the Classic Editor (with Panels) or Blocks.
How will content be migrated?
People with the Administrator role can migrate Panels to Blocks on a page-by-page basis if they want, independently of the Panels to Blocks migration schedule.
However, all site content with Panels will eventually be migrated in bulk by the WordPress Support Team. Our team will migrate sites one at a time over the next few months, and will contact primary site administrators beforehand to let them know when they can expect their migration(s) to happen.
What if I am not ready to migrate my site?
Just let us know when we reach out to you that you wish to be migrated at a later date.
Where can I learn how to use the new theme editor?
Resources for how to use the new theme editor will be available on boisestate.edu/webguide/ beginning October 21.
Learning opportunities are scheduled through the end of the calendar year, and additional sessions will be scheduled in 2025.
We have already held three pre-Gutenberg sessions for the campus community. Recordings are currently being edited and will soon be available upon request.
