Theatre Arts Scholarships

This information pertains specifically to scholarships available to students majoring in Theatre Arts or Theatre Arts Secondary Education. General scholarship information

  • Scholarships are open to continuing and incoming students. Incoming students must apply for admission to Boise State University by February 15.
  • You MUST be a full-time student for the entire 2025-2026 academic year in order to receive a Theatre Arts Scholarship.

How to apply for a Theatre Arts Scholarship:

  1. REQUIRED: Fill out the Boise State Scholarship Application by February 15, 2025
  2. REQUIRED: Submit a Theatre Scholarship Application Form and sign up for an in-person interview by February 19, 2025
  3. Highly Recommended: Fill out the FAFSA by February 15, 2025

Please note:

  • Theatre Arts scholarships do not require the FAFSA. However, you may be eligible for other Boise State scholarships that do require federal need. We highly recommend filling out the FAFSA since it can maximize your scholarship chances and award amount.
  • FAFSA deadline: February 15, 2025
  • Students who don’t meet the citizenship or eligible non-citizenship criteria for the FAFSA may still be eligible for need-based scholarships. Complete the Federal Student Aid Estimator and Boise State Scholarship Application. Email the Federal Student Aid Estimator results to scholarships@boisestate.edu, please be sure to include your student ID number.

In-person interviews

  • If you are a current Boise State student, you must sign up for an in-person interview as part of the scholarship application process.
  • In-person interviews will be held:
    • Thursday, February 20, 2025, 5:30 – 8:30 PM
    • Friday, February 21, 2025, 5 – 8 PM
  • The digital sign-up is included in the Theatre Scholarship Application Form

 

Video interviews/auditions

  • If you are an incoming Boise State student who plans to major in Theatre Arts or Theatre Arts Secondary Education, you may submit a video interview and/or audition instead of doing a in-person interview.

Optional materials

If you are a current Boise State student, you are encouraged but not required to bring the following materials to your in-person interview based on your interest/area of specialty:

  • Designer/Technician/Manager: Please submit a written statement of no more than 500 words explaining your interests and goals in pursuing this course of study, and a portfolio of designs (renderings of sets, costumes, light plots) and/or photographs of productions in which your designs are featured (may be class projects as well as realized designs). If submitting digitally, please share your portfolio as a Google Drive folder.
  • Dramatic Writing: Please submit a written statement of no more than 500 words explaining your interests and goals in pursuing this course of study and a 3-5 page sample of your work. If submitting digitally, please attach your statement and writing sample as a single document.
  • Performance: Please submit a written statement of no more than 500 words explaining your interests and goals in pursuing this course of study, a head shot, and two prepared contrasting monologues (for example: comedy/tragedy, or classical/contemporary) no longer than 90-seconds each. Optional: you may sing sixteen measures of a song in addition to your two monologues. If submitting digitally,  videos should be in a MP format or accessible via a provided YouTube link, and emailed to theatrefilmcw@boisestate.edu. Please attach your statement and resume as a single document.

Scholarships awarded

  • Thelma and Dean Brown Performing Arts Scholarship – An academic performance award for Theatre Arts or Film majors. The scholarship may cover all student tuition and fees for an academic year. Two Brown Scholarships are designated as renewable and are held by the most promising and distinguished Theatre Arts majors. All current scholarship recipients must reapply for a Brown award for the upcoming academic year. Renewal is NOT automatic.
  • The Fred Norman Memorial Scholarship in Theatre Arts – Open to Theatre Arts majors. Renewal is NOT automatic.
  • The Dan Allen Peterson Memorial Scholarship – Open to Theatre Arts and Film majors. Renewal is NOT automatic.
  • Theatre High School Festival Scholarship – A scholarship primarily intended for, though not limited to, recent high school graduates. Funding for this award is generated by registration fees from our annual High School Festival. The scholarship covers a portion of tuition and fees.  Renewal is NOT automatic.
  • Theatre Arts Department Scholarship – Funded by Boise State University and designated to cover a portion of tuition and fees.  Renewal is NOT automatic.
  • The Britt Bowden Scholarship –  Renewal is NOT automatic.
  • John and Eleanor Hunt Scholarship.  Renewal is NOT automatic.
  • The Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts Scholarship in Theatre Arts. Renewal is NOT automatic.
