Theatre Scholarships and Audition/Interview Information
This information pertains specifically to scholarships available to students majoring in Theatre Arts or Theatre Arts Secondary Education. General Scholarship Information:
- The next scholarship application period will open in January 2025. All scholarships will be awarded for the 2025-2026 academic year.
- Scholarships are open to continuing and incoming students. Incoming students must apply for admission to Boise State University by February 15.
- Students do not need to currently be full-time students in order to apply. However, students must plan to be full-time students for the entire academic year the scholarship will be awarded. In other words, you don’t need to be a full-time student in the 2024-2025 academic year, but must be a full-time student for the 2025-2026 academic year. Students who are not full-time in 2025-2026 will not receive their scholarship funds.
- Applicants must apply with an in-person interview or audition. If an applicant is truly unable to make an in-person audition, they may apply via digital video submissions.
- Please read the application requirements carefully, including the section on requirements based on your area of specialty. The materials will vary depending on your interests.

First Steps:
- Fill out the Boise State Scholarship Application.Â
- Fill out the FAFSA – The FAFSA is changing significantly in 2024, so even if you weren’t eligible in the past, you may be eligible now. Some scholarships require federal need, so fill out the FAFSA by February 15, 2025, to maximize your scholarship chances. Students who don’t meet the citizenship or eligible non-citizenship criteria for the FAFSA may still be eligible for need-based scholarships. Complete the Federal Student Aid Estimator and Boise State Scholarship Application. Email the Federal Student Aid Estimator results to scholarships@boisestate.edu, please be sure to include your student ID number.

Requirements by Area of Specialty:
Please submit the following materials based on your interest/area of specialty:
- Designer/Technician/Manager: Please submit a written statement of no more than 500 words explaining your interests and goals in pursuing this course of study, and a portfolio of designs (renderings of sets, costumes, light plots) and/or photographs of productions in which your designs are featured (may be class projects as well as realized designs). If submitting digitally, please share your portfolio as a Google Drive folder.
- Dramatic Writing: Please submit a written statement of no more than 500 words explaining your interests and goals in pursuing this course of study and a 3-5 page sample of your work. If submitting digitally, please attach your statement and writing sample as a single document.
- Performance: Please submit a written statement of no more than 500 words explaining your interests and goals in pursuing this course of study, a head shot, and two prepared contrasting monologues (for example: comedy/tragedy, or classical/contemporary) no longer than 90-seconds each. Optional: you may sing sixteen measures of a song in addition to your two monologues. If submitting digitally, videos should be in a MP format or accessible via a provided YouTube link, and emailed to theatrefilmcw@boisestate.edu. Please attach your statement and resume as a single document.
Scholarships Awarded:
- Thelma and Dean Brown Performing Arts Scholarship – An academic performance award for Theatre Arts or Film majors. The scholarship may cover all student tuition and fees for an academic year. Two Brown Scholarships are designated as renewable and are held by the most promising and distinguished Theatre Arts majors. All current scholarship recipients must reapply for a Brown award for the upcoming academic year. Renewal is NOT automatic.
- The Fred Norman Memorial Scholarship in Theatre Arts – Open to Theatre Arts majors. Renewal is NOT automatic.
- The Dan Allen Peterson Memorial Scholarship – Open to Theatre Arts and Film majors. Renewal is NOT automatic.
- Theatre High School Festival Scholarship – A scholarship primarily intended for, though not limited to, recent high school graduates. Funding for this award is generated by registration fees from our annual High School Festival. The scholarship covers a portion of tuition and fees. Renewal is NOT automatic.
- Theatre Arts Department Scholarship – Funded by Boise State University and designated to cover a portion of tuition and fees. Renewal is NOT automatic.
- The Britt Bowden Scholarship –Â Renewal is NOT automatic.
- John and Eleanor Hunt Scholarship. Renewal is NOT automatic.
- The Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts Scholarship in Theatre Arts. Renewal is NOT automatic.
