Bella Ramirez is a Film and Television major completing her internship with Filmfort, Treefort Music Fest’s film festival which happens annually in Boise. Bella was born and raised in Redondo Beach, California and developed her love for film as a child who moved to Boise for a change of pace. As a senior, she has found her niche in films that offer a taste of life– she hopes to help audience members feel individually seen, while also challenging perspectives and sparking curiosity.

Being new to the Treefort scene, I’ve absolutely enjoyed connecting with the community, while helping put together the eclectic and fun puzzle that is Filmfort.  Being a part of the programming team, my role was to watch and review films submitted to the festival, assist with the promotion of films and tickets, edit media, along with being a production assistant on set for Filmfort’s festival trailers. I’ve gained the ability to put myself in the mind of the festival audience members, in hopes of providing them with an equally new and unforgettable experience.

Originally, I majored in film as a vehicle for the stories I wanted to write. The film rating process ultimately led me to pursuing this role, as there is no better way to learn than by doing. In hopes of furthering my screenwriting and story structure knowledge, I was immediately drawn to the position. Watching and rating submissions has been a privilege. The process has exposed me to the diversity within the indie film world.

Watching and reviewing over fifty films was an enlightening experience, as each one left me with something different. My favorites are the ones that leave me craving more. A film that I’ve found that particularly embodies this is Jess Anderson’s Cliff. With an abstract narrative structure, this film kept me curious for the full eleven minutes. I was so engulfed in this world, I hardly noticed any time had gone by. The attention to detail was evident in every shot and the raw emotion from the actors paired beautifully with each cinematic choice. The experimental structure of the film effortlessly supported the intriguing, yet unsolved mystery. I can’t wait for the audience to experience the spirit of the film through the screen.

By far, the most fun I’ve had has been working as a production assistant on set. The incredibly collaborative and creative atmosphere of a shoot day has greatly reinforced my passion for film. While on set shooting a Filmfort trailer, I was exposed to the silliness and play-like nature of the industry. This atmosphere, paired with the skilled efficiency of the experienced crew was truly unforgettable. Fun mixed with productivity is all I could ever ask for out of a job. Helping with the art department for the first time also opened my eyes to something I can absolutely see myself having a future in. Whether it was stacking hot dogs or gluing eyelashes on a volleyball, this shoot surely kept me on my toes! My greatest takeaway from being on set was how important the people you’re working with are. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and treated me with a gentle patience that made me feel motivated and like I truly belonged. Sometimes it’s not where you work, but the people you work with that make the job worth coming back to. I’m grateful to say I have found both!

If I could give advice to students preparing to apply for internships, I would first stress the importance of customizing your resume and cover letter. Being in college, most internships won’t expect you to have a huge amount of experience and a cover letter is a great way to provide the employer with a personalized introduction. This also demonstrates enthusiasm and gives you the opportunity to provide context for your resume. It also allows you to advocate for yourself and why you are a good fit for the position. After landing an internship that is well suited, I would stress the importance of making the most of the experience! This includes exhibiting professionalism, building relationships, asking for feedback, being willing to make mistakes and learn, while continuously showing initiative and adaptability.

This internship has by definition offered me everything I could’ve asked for, along with new and exciting experiences. Most importantly, it has shown me that I am exactly where I need and want to be. As I head towards graduation, it is now time for me to reflect on my various interests and the different areas I have gained experience in. Helping in the art department, I have gained insight in set design, props, and overall storytelling. After college, aiming for a role like production assistant or art director feels right for me. These roles will allow me to utilize my creative vision, while also executing it on a practical level. Through this internship I have gained  the physical support of updates to my resume and portfolio, along with a great amount of connections, and most importantly a greater sense of positivity and open mindedness. I feel nothing but confidence in regards to my future career in the film industry! I’m eagerly counting down the days till Filmfort, while patiently taking in everything as I watch the process unfold. I am filled with gratitude and proud to be a part of something that works so hard to discover, showcase, and celebrate a diverse plethora of filmmakers.
