5 ½ Things About Service-Learning Courses

Can you believe this? Boise State students have accumulated 1.2 million service hours since 2000 through service-learning courses. You can become a part of this incredible number – while earning credits – when you register for a service-learning class. These classes are service projects and academic courses all in one. Here are 5 ½ reasons you should consider taking a service-learning course.

1)Build your resume

Service-learning is a great thing to include on your resume. Update your resume with all the skills you learn during your experience including self-efficacy, analytical skills, and social development. Employers will be impressed by your dedication to taking your learning outside the classroom and into the community.

2)No final, paper, or exam

These classes are project-based, so you don’t have to worry about writing a paper or taking a test. Instead, you get to demonstrate your learning in the community. You could be helping children in their school, planning events for a nonprofit organization, or coming up with a resource to help end food insecurity.

3)Get hands-on experience

You won’t spend the semester sitting in a classroom with these classes. You get to spend time off campus and put all your classroom learning into “real world” practice. What better way to learn and get the most out of your college experience?

4)Learn what you love to do

How do you know what you love if you don’t try new things? Service-learning allows you to gain experience in a field that might interest you that you haven’t explored yet. You gain a new experience, positive impact on your community AND personal and academic growth.

5)Find classes for all majors

You have a plethora of options for courses in fields like child psychology, chemistry, communication and personal health, just to name a few. There are courses for all majors.

5 ½) Make an impact on the Boise community

Go for it! Find a service-learning course in your area of interest and make a difference.
