About

Introducing an exciting academic opportunity at Boise State University – the all-new Legal Studies Minor! Exploring law, courts, and judges, this minor is designed to inform students about the legal system and the important policy makers within it. The minor allows students to choose engaging classes, covering everything from criminal law and civil liberties to business law. They will also gain valuable mediation, writing and communication skills.

Whether students are interested in law school or just want to understand the legal system and its importance to governance and society, the Legal Studies Minor at Boise State University can assist in furthering their success. 

Minor Requirements

Complete all of the following:

• CJ321 – Criminal Law (3)
• POLS210 – Courts, Judges, and Judicial Politics (FS) (3)

Take at least 2 of the following:

• CJ350 – Methods of Legal Research (3)
• CJ371 – Corrections Law (3)
• CJ375 – Criminal Procedure (3)
• CJ462 – Contemporary Issues in American Criminal Courts (3)
• POLS446 – Constitutional Law (S) (3)
• POLS447 – Civil Liberties (3)
• POLS448 – Women and the Law (3)
• POLS449 – Law, Politics, and Society (3)

Take at least 1 of the following:

• BUS202 – The Legal Environment of Business (3)
• BUS441 – Business in Society: Ethics, Responsibility and Sustainability (3)
• HIST330 – Human Rights Past and Present (3)
• PHIL209 – Thinking Well: Introduction to Logic (FH) (3)
• PHIL311 – Normative Ethics (3)
• COMM415 – Who Can Say What? Free Expression and the Law (3)

Take 6 credits from:

• CONFLICT402 – Mediation (3)
• COMM201 – Argument and Reason (3)
• COMM231 – Public Speaking (3)
• COMM377 – Advanced Public Presentation (3)
• WRITE201 – Nonfiction Writing (3)
• WRITE212 – Introduction to Technical Communication (3)

• CJ493 – Internship (1 – 12)
• POLS493 – Internship (1 – 12)
• CONFLICT493 – Internship (1 – 3)

Note: CJ493, POLS493, or CONFLICT493 (internship) only count towards the minor with approval from the director of the minor. A maximum of 3 credit hours of internship may be counted towards the minor, and students can complete only one internship for the minor.
