Jen Schneider is Professor in the School of Public Service and serves as Interim Associate Dean.
Jen’s research addresses challenges in the public communication of scientific and environmental controversies, with a particular focus on industry rhetoric and discourses of technical expertise. Recent projects include the books Under Pressure: Coal Industry Rhetoric and Neoliberalism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) and The Joy of Science: Seven Principles for Scientists Seeking Happiness, Harmony, and Success. Her 2010 book Engineering and Sustainable Community Development, co-authored with Juan Lucena and Jon Leydens, has been used in classrooms around the world. Jen teaches courses on the Philosophy of Social Inquiry, U.S. Energy Policy, Science and Environmental Communication, Qualitative Methods, and Science, Technology, and Society (STS). Jen’s work and collaborations have also been funded by the National Science Foundation, and she has been published in Science Communication, Frontiers in Communication, Environmental Communication, Rhetoric and Public Affairs, Engineering Studies.
At the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, Jen served as an Associate Professor from 2007-2014, and taught courses in Energy Policy, Science and Environmental Communication, and Media Studies. She was also a professor in the McBride Honors Program in Public Affairs, and served as advisor for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Policy (STEP) graduate minor. Jen received a Ph.D. and M.A. in Cultural Studies from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California, and a B.A. in French from the College of Idaho.
