The Frank Church Institute High School Model UN

Video Transcript

Luke Sharon, Lake City High School: This is my second Frank Church Model UN conference, and, you know, it’s it’s something I really cherish and I something I really value. Uh, as someone who’s looking to go into Political Science, it’s perfect for the kind of career I want to go into. I pulled in a lot of my friends this year who didn’t do it last year, and I told them I was like, “The most important thing about Model UN is the people you meet.” We just met um these two fellows. They’re from Moscow and they’re from Ukraine, and, and you know, we were kind of like um enemies in the conference, but immediately when we got out, we we’re we’re super tight now. And so that’s kind of the whole thing about Model UN is like it’s about those relationships, not only the relationships you make with those Model UN countries but with the delegates and the people uh who are in your chambers.

Speaker 2: I’m Lizzie Wiggley. I’m from Sage International. I was in the Security Council, just like any other Model UN conference I’ve been to. At the start, everyone’s a bit more quiet ’cause like we’re all meeting each other for the first time, but I feel like as the days went on, like we all kind of grew closer, and it’s really easy to form friendships when you’re all trying to like debate over stuff and solve issues. And so I noticed there was definitely a lot of like groups forming, people bonding over like different resolutions, people coming together and collaborating. And it’s just really great how like much this kind of stuff brings people together. I want to thank the Frank Church Institute for putting on this amazing conference. It was so great, and for my second Model UN conference, it was so much fun.

Speaker 3: My name is Ethan LaHaug. I’m a Boise State student studying psychology and political science, and I was really happy this year to be representing the United States for the Frank Church Model United Nations uh in the Security Council this year. I’ve never done Model UN before. It was my first year, but even with that uh, the space provided by the Frank Church Institute allowed me to grow as a student and as a leader, and also allowed me to observe the growth and the learning that occurred for all the high school students that were here as well. I certainly learned a lot, and I know the students did as well. Uh, it was a very positive experience for all of us.

Speaker 4, student participating at conference: Turkey will continue to promote three children per household for its citizens. We must have a strong nation.

Speaker 5, student participating at conference: Toward a better world for everyone, not just our country. We can only conquer climate change with a revolution

Speaker 6, student participating at conference: But we are opting for any resolution that will safely, peacefully, and reward

Speaker 7, student participating at conference: every single one of you. Has gone up here and said, “My country either has too many people or we don’t have enough people.” We must start thinking globally.

Kristin Kane, U.S. Principal Deputy Secretary of State: Model UN is what we call multilateral relations, so that’s about 200 times more complex than working on bilateral relations.

Dr. Marlene Tromp, President of Boise State University: Because this program made him think, this program made me see the world.
