Description
Consider the complicated nature and dynamics of human trafficking, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking in the U.S. and Spain on this summer, faculty-led program: Comparative Perspectives on Gender-Based Violence in Barcelona, Spain. Together we will examine the scope of gender-based violence, different forms of gender-based violence, and national trends and practices. We will work to understand the roles of governments, non-governmental organizations, and individual actors in addressing the problem of gender-based violence.
CJ 497/597 is a hybrid Spring semester class open to 30 students who have taken at least one Criminal Justice course. The course meets M/W 3:00-4:15 (when face-to-face). Scholarship opportunities will be available supported by Criminal Justice & The School of Public Service.
While abroad, students will attend lectures with experts on gender-based violence and victim services; take a guided tour of Barcelona’s Raval neighborhood and speak with legal and social service practitioners serving sex workers; visit the Commission for Domestic and Gender-based Violence, and take a tour of Catalonia’s Parliament and meet with Catalonian legislators.
Students will also enjoy a Catalan cooking class, take in a Flamenco show, experience a guided tour of La Sagrada Familia, and visit several historical and cultural landmarks such as the Gothic Quarter and the Magic Fountain during this two-week program in Spain. The Study Abroad component is optional for students taking the course, but in order to Study Abroad you must be in the course!
