Admission Deadline
The Master of Public Health program as well as the Graduate Certificates in Health Services Leadership program accepts students for fall admission only. In order to be considered for the Master of Public Health program or the Graduate Certificates in Health Services Leadership, you must first apply to the Graduate College and be accepted and have the Graduate application, official transcripts, and all related admission materials and requirements turned in by the following deadlines:
Applications for the Master of Public Health Program and the Graduate Certificates in Health Services Leadership are due on January 15th (Priority Application Deadline).  If spaces in the cohort remain available after that date, we will consider these applications, as long as they are received before May 15th (Final Application Deadline). If a graduate assistantship is important to you, please submit your application by the priority application deadline of January 15th. Doing so will increase your opportunities for receiving an assistantship.
Admission Requirements
Applicants are required to have earned at least a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or a degree from a non-U.S. institution of higher education that is judged equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree by the International Admissions office and have an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 (based on a 4-point scale) computed for all undergraduate credits from the applicant’s most recent baccalaureate degree.
A prospective student may apply at any time and should follow the general graduate application procedure for degree-seeking students (see Graduate Admission Requirements). Admission to the program is based on:
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended.
- A 500-word statement explaining educational and career background and future objectives.
- A current résumé or curriculum vitae.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- Completion of a proctored writing examination.
- For international applicants, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the internet-based exam/550 on the paper-based exam or an IELTS score of at least 6.0.
Important Notes:
- Email mphinfo@boisestate.edu to schedule a proctored writing examination. Please note that applicants who have already received a graduate degree do not need to schedule a writing exam.
- The Master of Public Health program does NOT require applicants to take the GRE (Graduate Records Examinations).
- The Master of Public Health program expects students to earn grades of B or better in all graduate coursework. A course grade of less than a B may not be used to meet the degree requirements.
Application Steps:
To apply for our Master of Public Health program or the Graduate Certificates in Health Services Leadership follow these general steps and guidelines:
- Visit the Boise State University Graduate College Website and begin your application by going to the “Apply to Graduate School” page.
- Select the type of application based on the type of student group you fit most into. If you’re graduating from Boise State University with an undergraduate degree select “Undergrad Application.” If you obtained an undergraduate degree or are coming from a previous institution in the United States select “Domestic Graduate Application.” If you obtained an undergraduate degree or are coming from a previous institution outside the United States select “International Graduate Application.”
- You’ll need to create an account with your application and follow the steps in the application system to complete and submit your application. These will include providing your student information, transcripts, requesting letters of recommendation, uploading your personal statement, arranging with us to have a writing assessment taken, and any and all other Graduate College and program requirements.
Please Note:
For new applicants to the MPH program
If you are applying to the MPH program and an MPH certificate, two graduate applications must be submitted (you may use the same materials for both applications). Each new application will be subject to an additional fee.
For current or accepted students of the MPH program
If you are an active MPH student and decide you would like to add an MPH Certificate, you will need to submit a new application (you may use your original application materials) and pay a new application fee.

Other Application Considerations
Background for Admission
The Master of Public Health (MPH) program expects applicants to have knowledge and/or occupational experience related to the healthcare field. Applicants usually meet this requirement with substantial undergraduate coursework in public health or a closely-related discipline. Closely-related disciplines include public health, biology, nursing, education, psychology, and other areas broadly related to health. Prospective students who are not certain they have the required background should contact mphinfo@boisestate.edu.
Selecting Your Program
When you fill out the Graduate Admission Application form, you will select an Emphasis Area for the Master of Public Health Program. After you submit your application, you cannot change your program selection yourself. Contact the Graduate College if you need to make a change: gradcoll@boisestate.edu
Applying for both a certificate and a degree. If you wish to apply for both a certificate and a Master of Public Health degree, you must submit separate applications. You will not be charged a second application fee.
Letters of Recommendation
You will identify two recommendation providers when you complete your application. Ideally, at least one recommendation provider should be one of your former professors. Other suitable references include employment supervisors and volunteer coordinators.
Once you have entered their contact information in the application system, they will receive an email prompting them to complete the recommendation process online. They are unable to complete the recommendation electronically they should mail it directly to:

Monitor Your Application
To find out if the Graduate College has received the recommendations you requested, log in to the application system to check your application. Log in to my.boisestate.edu to check on transcripts and test scores.
Decision Notification
The Dean of the Graduate College reviews the MPH Selection Committee’s recommendations. The Graduate College notifies students if they have been or have not been accepted into the MPH program.
Please note that selection of candidates and processing by the Graduate College can take two to four weeks following the application deadline.
