Dr. Miguel Reina Ortiz joined Boise State University’s School of Public and Population Health in August 2022.
Dr. Reina Ortiz completed his medical training at Universidad Central del Ecuador before obtaining a Master of Science (Microbiology) from Universidad San Francisco de Quito and a Master of Public Health from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He completed his academic training with a PhD in Global Communicable Diseases from the University of South Florida. He has completed advanced studies and fellowships in Behavioral Economics (Harvard Business School Executive Education), Bioethics (UNESCO), Leadership (Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.), among others. He has recently been accepted in the competitive Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Reina Ortiz is a global health scholar with a focus on global health and international medicine.
His research includes HIV-related health disparities and disease outcomes and post-disaster health outcomes. His HIV research focuses on vulnerable as well as key population groups. Recently, he collaborated in research to evaluate the impact of behavioral economic strategies to improve HIV testing among pregnant women in a high-HIV burden setting of Ecuador. His post-disaster research focuses on infectious disease dynamics in post-disaster settings (e.g., ZIKV) as well as mental health and sexual and reproductive health issues. His research has been conducted in low- resource settings like rural tropics and high-HIV urban settings of Ecuador, rural areas of Costa Rica. He has also collaborated with colleagues in other resource limited settings like Nicaragua, Nepal, and India, to mention a few.
Dr. Reina-Ortiz is an avid community collaborator and advocates for improved health outcomes in global health and international medicine settings. For instance, during COVID-19, Dr. Reina Ortiz was active in social and mainstream media, educating Hispanic communities on COVID-19 prevention and control while addressing community concerns. Occasionally, he has published op-ed pieces in local newspapers in resource-poor areas of Ecuador where he advocated for better public health infrastructure. He is also an engaged professional member with an outstanding record of service including: Secretary and Treasurer of the National Association of Rural Physicians of Ecuador (ANAMER) – Esmeraldas Chapter, Comptroller for ANAMER (National-level service), Secretary-Treasurer of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) Committee on Global Health (ACGH), ACGH President-Elect, ACGH President, ACGH Past-President (current), Chair of the ACGH Pre-Meeting Course (in two occasions), Chair of the ACGH Symposia, among others.
Dr. Reina Ortiz has a strong interest in Global Health Diplomacy with an aim of understanding and contributing to the international dialogue on disease prevention, including international binding and non-binding instruments and their negotiation and application. Recently, he Chaired one Symposium on Global Health Diplomacy and he helped in the organization of a second Global Health Diplomacy symposium, both delivered in the context of the 2021 Annual Meeting of ASTMH.
