SPPH doctoral student Meredith Spivak recently attended and presented at the Cascadia Annual Symposium for Environmental, Occupational and Population Health in Blaine, Washington where she won an award for her “Student Ignite Presentation.”
This symposium brings together faculty, students and researchers from the University of Washington, the University of British Columbia, Oregon State University, Simon Fraser University, Washington State University and Boise State University to build community and address critical issues facing population health in the region.
Spivak’s presentation: “International Collaboration: What do we know about biomonitoring persistent pesticides in animal fur and feathers?” won a $250 award for giving the best oral presentation by a student.
Spivak’s talk described novel methodologies for measuring persistent pesticides in animal fur and feathers, and discussed innovative ways that such methodology could be used to improve human and animal health.
Spivak was the highest scoring presenter and more than 50 student abstracts were submitted from graduate students across six institutions.
