for her volunteer teaching work at Snake River Correctional Institution, Teaching Inmates and BSU students in a classroom environment
Sarah Mawhirter, Volunteer of the Quarter, 4th Quarter: Faculty Lecturer in the Sociology Department helped bring a program modeled after the InsideOut Program to SRCM. Snake River Correctional Institution had this to say about the Program
There was no money to fund this program. When I met with Sarah about it, she said “don’t let money keep us from doing the program. We will find the funds”, and she did just that. She went above and beyond speaking to her supervisors to get them to fund the pilot project for this program. Beyond that, they are well on their way to the next semester. And Boise State is funding it. Sarah, along with her students, bus here every week for the program. She has donated her time and resources to see that the AIC’s are given as many skills to help them be successful upon release. She didn’t stop with just that program, she has now gotten others involved and is working with SRCM to start other programs as well. She brought an excitement about corrections and community partnership in the college. Recruiting more volunteers and expanding her own program. There is an excitement among the AIC’s that get to participate in the program.
