The Idaho Child Welfare Scholar Program

The Idaho Child Welfare Scholar Program provides a stipend to promising MSW social work students who are committed to practicing social work in the field of child welfare. These stipends are funded through Title IV-E of the Social Security Act. The purpose of this program is to recruit and retain qualified staff in child welfare practice with specialization in the areas of foster care and adoptions.

Students receiving stipends must agree to accept employment in Child and Family Services within the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) for a period of time corresponding to the stipend received. Stipends are available for both potential and current Health and Welfare employees. The MSW stipend award is primarily intended to develop advanced skills among experienced Idaho Health and Welfare Department employees.

Students accepted into the Child Welfare Scholar Program are placed in public or private child welfare agencies in Idaho for their field placement and have access to a variety of child welfare training opportunities and resources.

Note: The Idaho Child Welfare Scholar Program is on hold as of Fall 2024. Please check back in January of 2025 for updates.

The National Health Service Corps College Loan Repayment Program

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is dedicated to improving the health of the Nation’s underserved. NHSC clinicians devote all or part of their careers to serving underserved populations, making lasting contributions to the health of their communities. To date, 22,000 NHSC clinicians have provided or continue to provide primary and preventive health care—including oral and mental and behavioral health care services—to millions of people.

Applicants who are selected to participate in the highly competitive NHSC Loan Repayment Program agree to provide full-time primary care services in an approved practice site located in a federally designated health professional shortage area. For the 2-year minimum service commitment, the NHSC will pay up to $50,000, based on the participant’s qualifying educational loans. Participants’ loans are repaid in addition to the salary earned in a qualifying agency. The NHSC Loan Repayment Program is open to MSW clinical social workers as well as many other health professionals. For information contact the NHSC website.
