A CommUniversity is a partnership between higher education and its surrounding community. Where the traditional function of colleges and universities focus solely on academic learning, the CommUniversity emphasizes real-world impact, civic engagement, and lifelong learning. They create opportunities for students, faculty, local organizations, and residents to work together toward shared goals.
What role can Service-Learning play in this?
- Service-Learning has a primary objective of exposing students with opportunities to learn about community needs and be a part of addressing them.
- Service-Learning encourages universities to become active, problem-solving partners in their communities.
- Service-Learning can match community needs with community resources: human, research and development, outreach and advocacy, and expanded collaboration.

English Language Center
“The English Language Center began our partnership with the Service-Learning Program more than a decade ago. Service-Learners play an important role at the ELC – they act as classroom assistants, cultural guides and community ambassadors, and contribute to the welcoming environment that is the foundation of our school. Seeing the exchange of language, culture, and smiles between Service-Learners and ELC students is a joy that we as staff members look forward to every semester”.
– Devon Jancin, Curriculum Coordinator, English Language Center
