Boise State University is proud to announce the launch of On a First Name Basis, a new podcast that shines a spotlight on the human side of research. Created, produced, and hosted by Chris Saunders, this podcast aims to bridge the gap between the groundbreaking research happening at Boise State and the local and regional community.

More than Just Research—It’s About People

The core mission of On a First Name Basis is to introduce the public to the people behind the research, offering listeners a more personal connection to Boise State’s scholars. While the podcast discusses research, the focus is on the stories, experiences, and motivations of the faculty and staff who drive these projects. Saunders emphasizes that the podcast is less about grant figures and academic jargon, and more about the human narratives that shape the research being conducted on campus.

The podcast offers a unique platform for scholars to share how their personal backgrounds and connections to Idaho have influenced their work, as well as how their research impacts local communities. By listening, the audience not only gains insight into the research itself but also learns how it directly benefits the Treasure Valley, the state of Idaho, and beyond.

The First Episode—Meet Jared Talley

The first episode of On a First Name Basis features Jared Talley, an environmental philosopher at Boise State. Talley and Saunders discuss their Idaho roots and how growing up in this region has shaped their perspectives on the environment. Talley also dives into his research, exploring the intersection of agricultural challenges, academic research, and policy decisions. One of the key takeaways is how academics like Talley can take their work beyond the university and apply it to the real-world issues affecting communities.

The episode captures the heart of the podcast—telling the stories of Boise State’s scholars in ways that are engaging, relatable, and meaningful to the public. Through these conversations, listeners may even find opportunities for collaboration or community-based projects with faculty like Talley.
