Pilot Project Grant Program
The NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Matrix Biology is pleased to announce its Pilot Project Grant Program. Funded by the NIH/NIGMS (COBRE grant P20GM109095), this program will provide support for promising faculty members undertaking biomedical research. The goal of the program is to enhance Matrix Biology research at Boise State University. To achieve this, we aim to support investigators to generate preliminary data that will lead to competitive applications for external funding.
We anticipate funding of up to four two-year pilot projects at $50,000 direct costs per year. The second year of funding is dependent on a demonstration of progress.
Investigators are encouraged to utilize shared core facilities including but not limited to the BRC proteomics, metabolomics, histology, microscopy, protein expression, and the Biomedical Research Vivarium core facilities.
Key Dates
Applications will be due at 5 p.m. on June 15, 2020, submitted as a single PDF document to Tracy Yarnell, Program Administrator, COBRE-Matrix Biology (BRC@boisestate.edu).
An internal review committee will be convened the first week in July.
Applications recommended for funding will undergo external review and be considered for final approval by the COBRE-Matrix Biology External Advisory Committee (EAC) and NIGMS.
The earliest anticipated start date will be August 1, 2020.
Eligibility
Eligible investigators must hold a faculty appointment at Boise State University. A letter of support from the individual’s departmental chair stating that the faculty member is able to commit 25% effort to his/her pilot research project is required. Faculty members are not eligible for Pilot Grant support if they are the principal investigator on an R01 grant or its equivalent. Faculty will be required to provide a mentoring plan as well as a letter from the mentor confirming their commitment to the pilot project.

Epilepsy Research Program (ERP)
The FY20 Defense Appropriations Act provides funding to the Department of Defense Epilepsy Research Program (ERP) to understand the causative links between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and epilepsy so that post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) will be both preventable and treatable.  As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the Defense Health Agency J9, Research and Development Directorate manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcements/Funding Opportunities is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC).

Peer Reviewed Alzheimer’s Research Program (PRARP)
The FY20 Defense Appropriations Bill has not been signed into law. Although FY20 funds have not been appropriated for the Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Alzheimer’s Research Program (PRARP), the PRARP is providing the information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop ideas for submission to the anticipated FY20 funding opportunities. This pre-announcement should not be construed as an obligation by the Government.
 The FY20 Defense Appropriations Act is providing funding to the Department of Defense PRARP to support research which addresses the long-term consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) as they pertain to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD) for Service members, Veterans, and the general public.  As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the Defense Health Agency J9, Research and Development Directorate manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcements/Funding Opportunities is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC).

Chronic Pain Management Research Program (CRMRP)
The FY20 Defense Appropriations Act provides funding to the Department of Defense Chronic Pain Management Research Program (CPMRP) to support research of exceptional scientific merit with the potential to make a significant impact on improving the health and quality of life of Service members, Veterans, and all Americans living with chronic pain. Per the FY19 CPMRP Congressional appropriation, chronic pain is defined as a pain that occurs on at least half the days for six months or more, and which can be caused by issues including, but not limited to: combat- and training-related physical or mental stress and trauma, migraines and chronic headaches, traumatic brain injury, arthritis, muscular-skeletal conditions, neurological disease, tick and vector-borne disease, other insect-transmitted or tropical disease, and cancer. The CPMRP seeks to support and promote innovative, high-impact research to prevent the development and improve the management of chronic pain, with specific emphasis on the utilization and implementation of non-opioid therapies or non-addictive complementary methods. As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the Defense Health Agency J9, Research and Development Directorate manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation.
