Effective on October 27, 2024, the National Science Foundation (NSF) implemented multifactor authentication (MFA) for Research.gov as part of an ongoing commitment to enhancing security and safeguarding NSF’s IT systems, user accounts, personal and scientific data, and the integrity of the merit review process. This extra step protects both the research community and NSF. See Dear Colleague Letter (NSF 25-011) for details. View the MFA Options Overview.
NSF has published a new page with how-to guides, video tutorials, and FAQs for signing into Research.gov using the new requirements. Boise State’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) has reviewed the requirements and various options for MFA and, in consultation with the Office of Information Technology (OIT), have determined that all options are acceptable for use by Boise State faculty and staff.
Faculty with the Principal (PI) or co-Principal (co-PI) role in Research.gov will need to use the Google Authenticator app on their mobile device to sign in to Research.gov. Please follow the instructions and tutorials found on the About Signing into Research.gov page. If you have an upcoming NSF proposal submission in Research.gov, please complete these required setup steps as soon as possible to avoid any delays or issues with submission. Contact your OSP Pre-Award Research Administrator if you have any questions or are unable to login.
