Call for Research Project Leads – NIH COBRE Phase 1: Biomaterials and Biointerfaces Center of Biomedical Research Excellence

Co-Leads Dave Estrada and Gunes Uzer seek Research Project Leads (RPLs) to join their NIH Biomaterials and Biointerfaces Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (B2 COBRE) proposal team. Their B2 COBRE will converge materials science and biology, aiming to explore how dynamic physical environments interface with biological systems to accelerate the intelligent design of biomedical devices. Intentionally interdisciplinary, the B2 COBRE will integrate biomaterials with biological sciences to drive transformational outcomes. Examples include but are not limited to, developing new biomaterials for regenerative medicine compatible with 3D bioprinting, novel point-of-care diagnostics, nanotheranostic cancer imaging and drug delivery systems, and tissue-mimicking multi-cellular models. Such advances will lay the foundation for new cures, treatments, and instruments to improve human health.

For this call, we seek broad participation from a diverse set of researchers from across the university. This interdisciplinary Center can have RPLs from various fields including materials science, biology, computer science, engineering (mechanical, civil, electrical, biomedical), biomolecular sciences, chemistry, physics, neuroscience, mathematics, and more. Questions on alignment to the theme can be addressed to Dave Estrada (daveestrada@boisestate.edu) and Gunes Uzer (gunesuzer@boisestate.edu).

For more information on the funding opportunity, see the NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence Phase 1 solicitation.

RPL Eligibility Criteria:
  • Must qualify as either an Early Stage Investigator (ESI) or New Investigator (NI).
  • Hold a multi-year tenure track or research faculty appointment.
  • Lead an independent research program with independent lab space.
  • Have a research portfolio that supports the Center’s theme of biomaterials and biointerfaces.
Opportunities for RPLs:
  • Each RPL is assigned a mentor to guide the RPL’s research and professional development.
  • Each RPL will lead a research project within the center’s focus areas for up to 2-3 years for up to $125k/year in direct costs.
  • RPLs will have support in securing extramural funding as they transition to leading their own independent research areas through competitive grant funding (such as R01s).
