Limited Submission Notice: Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) – Phase 1, FY 2025

Summary

The Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) program supports the establishment and development of innovative biomedical research centers at Institutional Development Award (IDeA)-eligible institutions through awards for three sequential five-year phases. The purpose of the COBRE Phase 1 award is to build capacity in an area of biomedical research through the establishment of a center of excellence that helps develop a critical mass of investigators who are able to compete effectively for independent research funding and improve infrastructure in the center’s area of research.

Award

$1.5 million in annual direct costs, excluding consortium facilities and administrative (F&A) costs for 5 years.

Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline

One (1) application per institution is permitted.

Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program. For such approval, PIs must first submit a one- to two-page white paper to limitedsubmissions@boisestate.edu by 4 pm on August 16, 2024.

Your white paper should follow the structure of the provided template and include:

  • A description of the COBRE theme and how it will build research capacity at Boise State.
  • A brief description of the potential research projects and the junior faculty who will lead them.
  • A description of the administrative approach.
  • If this is a resubmission, please outline significant strengths and weaknesses identified by the panel and the corresponding major changes between submissions.

White papers will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Clear description of the COBRE theme that is innovative and supports development of research capacity.
  • Do the PI and Core Leads have the appropriate background to establish, develop, and lead the COBRE to build research capacity in the proposed theme.
  • Are the research projects clearly described, innovative, and appropriate for the lead junior faculty. 
  • Clear description of the administrative establishment and coordination of the COBRE.

  • August 16, 2024 by 4 pm – White papers due to limitedsubmissions@boisestate.edu (we encourage you to cc your Dean for visibility as well)
  • August 30, 2024 – Anticipated date applicants will be notified of approval
  • January 23, 2025 – All final proposal documents due to OSP
  • January 30, 2025 – Full proposal due to NIH
