Summary
This funding opportunity issued by DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) seeks applications to address the development of smart manufacturing technologies that can contribute to a resilient, responsive, leading-edge, and efficient manufacturing sector that delivers the technologies needed for the nation’s clean energy transition. Funding will be provided in four topic areas of smart manufacturing:
- Topic 1: Smart Manufacturing for a Circular Economy
- Topic 2: Smart Manufacturing for Tooling and Equipment for Sustainable Transportation
- Topic 3: Smart Manufacturing for High Performance Materials
- Topic 4: Smart Technologies for Sustainable and Competitive U.S. Mining

Award
- Topic 1: $500,000 to $2 million for 2-3 years
- Topic 2: $1 million to $2 million for 2-3 years
- Topic 3: $350,000 to $2 million for 2-3 years
- Topic 4: $1 million to $3 million for 2-3 years
Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline
One (1) concept paper per topic area per institution.
Only concept papers approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program. For such approval, PIs must first submit a one- to two-page white paper to limitedsubmissions@boisestate.edu by 4 pm on August 5, 2024.
Your white paper should describe:
- The topic and area of interest within the topic you intend to apply for.
- The technology and how it is unique and innovative.
- The goals and objectives of the project and how they meet objectives of the funding opportunity.
- The approach to the project and how you will meet the proposed objectives.
- The potential impact that the project will have on the relevant field and application.
- The risks and challenges of the project/technology and how the proposed work will mitigate them.
White papers will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Clearly describes the proposed technology, how the technology is unique and innovative, and how the technology will advance the current state of the art.
- Clearly states the goals and objectives of the proposed project that meet the objectives of the funding opportunity.
- Approach clearly describes a well thought out plan for achieving the proposed objectives.
- Identification of risks and challenges of the project/technology and possible mitigation strategies.

- August 9, 2024 – Anticipated date applicant will be notified of approval to advance toward application submission
- August 20, 2024 – Concept paper due to OSP
- August 22, 2024 – Concept paper due to DOE
- November 11, 2024 – Expected date all final proposal documents due to OSP
- November 18, 2024 – Expected date full proposal due to DOE
Important Notes on Sponsor Requirements
- The cost share must be at least 20% of the total project costs for research and development projects. See FOA for additional information and waivers.
- All cost share must come from non-federal sources unless otherwise allowed by law.
- To help applicants calculate proper cost share amounts, the Office of Energy Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) has included a cost share information sheet and sample cost share calculation as Appendices A and B to the FOA.
