Statement of Interest Notice for the NSF Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-2 Program

Summary

NSF-supported science and engineering research increasingly relies on cutting-edge infrastructure. The Mid-scale Research Infrastructure Programs are intended to provide NSF with an agile, Foundation-wide process to fund experimental research capabilities in the mid-scale range between the lower (Major Research Instrumentation) and higher (Major Multi-user Research Facility) programs.

The NSF Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-2 (Mid-scale RI-2) Program supports the implementation of unique and compelling research infrastructure projects, and may include any combination of equipment, instrumentation, cyberinfrastructure, broadly used large-scale data sets, and the commissioning and/or personnel needed to successfully complete the project. Mid-scale RI-2 projects should fill a research community-defined scientific need, or address an identified national research priority, that enables current and next-generation U.S. researchers and a diverse STEM workforce to remain competitive in a global research environment. Mid-scale RI-2 projects will directly enable advances in any of the research domains supported by NSF, including STEM education research, and translational research.

Award Details

Anticipated Funding Amount: 2 to 5 awards between $20 million to $100 million over five years.

Statements of Interest

The NSF Mid-scale RI-2 Program requires a large institutional effort with coordination across Campus Operations, the Division of Research and Economic Development, and university leadership. As such, to ensure resources are available for investigators interested in pursuing the Mid-scale RI-2, please send an email to crca@boisestate.edu with a brief description of the proposed infrastructure as well as space requirements by March 29, 2023. Following your submission, we will coordinate a discussion on resource requirements needed for the proposed infrastructure. Based on input from stakeholders and resource availability, we will make an encourage/discourage decision. If a discouraged decision is made because of limited resources, we will work with you in developing a plan for pursuing other infrastructure-type projects, such as the NSF Mid-Scale RI-1.
