Limited Submission Notice: US Department of Energy Science Foundations for Energy Earthshots

Summary:

The DOE Office of Science released the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for applications to advance basic research in support of the DOE’s Energy Earthshots™ initiative. The Energy Earthshots drive integrated program development and execution across the DOE’s basic science and energy technology offices. They are part of an all-hands-on-deck approach to provide science and technology innovations that address the tough technological challenges required to achieve our climate and economic competitiveness goals. The Energy Earthshots will accelerate breakthroughs towards more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions. This FOA supports small teams to build the scientific foundations for the Energy Earthshot goals.

Award:

$500,000 to $2,000,000 per year for up to three years.

Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline:

Three (3) pre-applications/applications per lead institution are permitted.

Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program. For such approval, Principal Investigators (PIs) must first submit a one- to three-page white paper to preaward@boisestate.edu by March 31, 2023.

Your white paper should:

  • Identify the PI, Co-PI(s), and other collaborators
  • Provide a clear and concise description of the objectives and technical approach of the proposed research. Applicants should address how the proposed research connects to each of the Energy Earthshots (Hydrogen, Long Duration Storage, Carbon Negative, Enhanced Geothermal, Floating Offshore Wind, or Industrial Heat).

If selected to submit a full proposal, PIs must ensure that proposals meet all requirements stated in the RFP, in the announcement, and in the implementing laws and regulations related to this grant program.

Key Submission Dates:

  • March 31, 2023 – White paper due to preaward@boisestate.edu. We encourage you to cc your Dean for visibility as well.
  • April 7, 2023 – Anticipated date internal awardees notified.
  • April 25, 2023 – Pre-Application due. OSP Pre-Award assistance is required to submit the Pre-Application.
  • May 23, 2023 – DOE Pre-Application response date.
  • June 13, 2023 – Full proposal due to OSP.
  • June 21, 2023 – Full proposal due to DOE.

Important Note on Requirements:

  • An individual may be named as the PI on only one pre-application and one application.
  • There is no limit on the number of applications on which an individual may participate as key/senior personnel.
  • Lead institutions must receive more funding than any proposed subrecipients.
