Using Scalar to Display Illuminated Medieval Manuscripts

The Center for Advancing Research and Creative Activity invites you to attend a virtual zoom presentation by Melissa Miller and Danielle Mihram. Approximately 45 medieval and Renaissance manuscripts (13th to 15th centuries) are located within the University of Southern California Libraries’ Special Collections Department. With their unique representation of medieval life and thought, illuminated manuscripts are among the most significant and aesthetically captivating artifacts (as treasurable “time capsules”) to survive from the Middle Ages. The speakers will discuss their goals to focus and analyze in-depth each manuscript, both to ensure its preservation/conservation, and then to determine, for each manuscript, the best method to build a multifaceted, multi-modal digital Catalogue Raisonné of the manuscripts, using Scalar as the publishing platform.

Speaker bios:

  • MELISSA L. MILLER is the Head of Hoose Library of Philosophy, and Humanities, Philosophy, Religion, Classics, Anthropology at the University of Southern California (USC). Dr. Miller is also an Assistant Professor for the Marshall School of Business, Master of Management in Library and Information Science (MMLIS) program at USC.
  • DANIELLE MIHRAM is the Associate Dean for the STEM and Health Sciences Libraries at USC. Her current research interests are multidisciplinary, including presently: the digital humanities, the preservation of cultural heritage artifacts, and the contributions of the digital humanities to the advancement of human knowledge.
