On Thursday, October 17th, our recent “Building Bridges” networking event brought together professionals, students, and community partners to exchange ideas, explore new opportunities, and build valuable connections. Here are some memorable moments and insights from the event.
The evening began with food, drinks, and lively networking as attendees gathered to connect. Students displayed their research projects across themed boards labeled Energy, Water, Land, and People, sparking conversations and showcasing fresh perspectives in the field.
We also congratulated Ashley Bosa, a doctoral student in the Department of Geological Sciences, on her successful dissertation presentation held on October 15.
Dr. Brittany Brand and Dr. Zac Provant presented on the Hazard and Climate Resilience Institute’s past and current projects, highlighting our impactful work in the community. They shared insights into the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiatives and the EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) efforts.
Following the presentation, the Northwest Environmental Justice Coalition took the floor, highlighting their commitment to addressing environmental justice issues in the region, emphasizing the importance of equitable access to resources, and the need for inclusive decision-making processes. They also mentioned upcoming funding opportunities.
In the middle of the event, Zac led a discussion with the questions, “What are the urgent challenges in Idaho’s environment, energy, and water sectors?” and “What opportunities are there to address the discussed challenges in these areas?”
Next, we carried out the “Building Bridges” activity while discussing initiatives, efforts, and solutions. Participants were divided into five groups to build bridges using popsicle sticks, straws, and glue guns. Once the time limit for bridge creation ended, each group competed to see whose bridge could withstand the most weight.
This was the most exciting part of the event and you could feel the energy and anticipation in the room. The strongest bridge held over 45 pounds – congratulations to the winning group!
Thank you so much to everyone who attended the event! For those who couldn’t make it this time, we hope to see you at our next networking event, where we’ll connect and build bridges to more wonderful opportunities!
