HCRI Graduate Student Conducts Volcano Research In Chile

Alex Daniels, HCRI research student in the Geosciences PhD program, recently took part in a 10-day interdisciplinary field trip in Chile, traveling from east to west along the volcanic arc to the coastline. The trip involved making stops in Chile’s central valley and coastal regions exploring stratigraphic exposures and landforms. The experience fostered new relationships among other participants and trip leaders, from a wide range of backgrounds and institutions in Chile and the United States.

Alex will be returning to Chile later this year to take part in an exchange program, where she will conduct research on volcanic debris flows and evacuations at Villarrica volcano. This will complement Alex’s existing PhD research at Mt Hood, understanding how different approaches to modeling these flows and mitigating against the hazard could relate to other work here in the US.
