Permission Numbers

A permission number is a 6-digit code issued by a faculty member that allows a student to register for a class. 

Why Might I Need a Permission Number?

Permission numbers can be requested when you are eligible to take a course (that is you have met all course prerequisites) but for some reason are unable to enroll directly (e.g., waiting on a transcript to verify that you have taken the course prerequisite).

Each department at Boise State has different policies surrounding the distribution of permission numbers. In the Department of Psychological Science, we consider the many factors when making a decision to give a permission number, for example we must consider:

  • Enrollment capacity of the course 
  • Space limitations of classrooms 
  • Whether the student has successfully completed the prerequisite course requirements
  • Structure and/or sequence of the course in the students’ degree plan

Requesting a permission number does not guarantee that a permission number will be issued. 

How to Request a Permission Number 

Contact psycadvising@boisestate.edu and provide as much information as possible (e.g., attach the transcript verifying you have taken the course prerequisite) so we can determine the feasibility of the request. Depending on when you send your request, it may take a few days to receive a response. 

Here is a sample of the type of email you should send us:

Hi Advisors, 

My name is Buster Bronco (111000001), and I am emailing you to request a permission number for your open class, PSYC 290-001. I took PSYC 101 at the College of Western Idaho last semester, but my official transcripts have not been evaluated yet. I have attached an unofficial copy to this email for your reference. 

If there is any additional information you need from me, please let me know. I appreciate your time and consideration.
