We have two exciting opportunities for you to meet the Faculty, Staff, and Advisors in the Department of Psychological Science on Tuesday, Feb 11th.
Talk Psych Seminar Series
Dr. McDonald will present his research on trauma in adult female offenders at noon in the SUB.
Topic
Understanding the Impacts of Trauma and Attachment Dysregulation on Adult Incarceration Through the Experiences of Adult Female Offenders
The experience of childhood trauma, often accompanied by dysregulated attachments with primary caregivers, tends to predict a variety of undesirable human and social outcomes, including mental health and substance abuse problems, numerous forms of victimization, difficulties in social functioning, and morbidity and early mortality. Childhood trauma and attachment dysregulation also strongly predict justice system involvement. In this talk we will discuss pathways by which such trauma and dysregulation can lead to incarceration, with focus on how to disrupt these pathways through primary and secondary prevention interventions, as well as how we can help remediate some of these problems to increase the likelihood of successful community reintegration for incarcerated persons preparing for release from custody.
