Prep Questions Set #1

Prep Questions Set#1 Due: Tuesday, 9/3

Responses may be submitted by email or in hard-copy.

If you choose email, please put “PQ1” in the subject line (use “PQ2” for the second set of prep questions, and so on).

If you choose hard-copy, feel free to reduce paper consumption by using single-spaced type and submitting half-sheets of paper. (A half-page of single-spaced type will typically be adequate in length, though you are of course free to write more than that.)

Remember to bring an extra copy with you to class Thursday, whether on paper or your laptop. You’ll refer to this in the course of class discussion and will undoubtedly want to revise and expand your responses as you incorporate them into your class notes.

Read: CCR, 1-17

  1. What, in your own view, makes studying the Pre-Socratics especially difficult, interesting, or important?
  2. The Milesians are traditionally regarded as the first philosophers in recorded Western history. Do you think that the title ‘philosophers’ is appropriate? Explain.
  3. Which of these three views do you take to be most significant, and why?
  4. Pose one question about Thales, Anaximander, or Anaximenes (or about studying ancient philosophy generally) to which you would really like to know the answer.
