Negotiation Skills to Improve the Workplace

While many people say they do not like to negotiate, they often fail to realize the negotiation process is part of our everyday life – both at work and elsewhere. This course will teach participates how to best approach negotiations in ways that make it less contentious, faster and more satisfying for all involved.

  • To recognize the most common negative tactics utilized by people and how to neutralize their effects
  • How and when to apply to apply some of the most effective negotiation tools and techniques
  • To understand why your approach and demeanor is much more important than any particular strategy

Presenter

Carol Barkes, is a neuroscience-based conflict and communication thought leader, mediator, best-selling
author, sought after keynote speaker and consultant with a wide variety of results producing experience.  She
hosts a Podcast called “Before It Begins – Strategically Speaking with Carol Barkes” and recently presented a
TEDx talk titled, “Conflict and Negotiation: From Flames to Solutions”.

Carol has spoken at the United Nations and provides training, consultation, facilitation, coaching and mediation
for many of the world’s most notable organizations.  She has been described as “the TOP Neuroscience and
Conflict Resolution expert in the United States” and has been honored twice as an Idaho Woman of the Year.
You can regularly find her featured as a media spokesperson on a multitude of outlets including NBC, CNN,
ABC, CBS, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, iHeart Radio, and PBS. Her ability to convey her knowledge in
a manner that is straight-forward, approachable and easily understandable makes her presentations relevant
and engaging.

Previously, Carol served as the Mediation Services Director for the Idaho Fourth District Court and has
overseen and mediated more than 14000 cases with a 90% plus resolution rate. Carol has also been an
adjunct professor at a variety of universities including the University of Idaho, Boise State University and
College of Southern Idaho and she runs or provides consultation for multiple eviction mediation programs
around the country.

She holds an AA degree in Fire Science, a BS degree in Global Leadership and Influence, a MS in Conflict and
Negotiation and a Certificate from MIT Sloan in Neuroscience and Leadership.
