Advanced Data Analysis with Power BI, Lab 1

Power Query

Learn how to automate the data cleanup process in preparation for data analysis.

The Power Query app inside Power BI is used for data cleanup and structure. In this course, you will be provided with data that needs to be prepared for the data visualization section of Power BI level 2 reports. With step-by-step instructions, you will learn how to merge queries, create conditional columns, time intelligence functions, simple calculations and much more. You will also set up your quick access toolbar, learn about the background M Code and how to back up your queries. This course is a prerequisite to Power BI Lab 2 and 3.

You will learn how to clean and prep your data, including:

  • New and improved tools, like the “UnPivot”, “Split Text to Rows” and “Date Transformations”
  • Extract data from various file types and a website table
  • Create conditional columns similar to IF functions in Excel
  • Backup your Power Query code for safekeeping

So you will be able to:

  • Reuse your Power Query multiple times without rebuilding it
  • Adjust and tweak the steps in plain English (no programming experience necessary)
  • Review Power Query steps from start to finish to understand how it was designed

Prerequisite

It is preferred – but not required – that you attend the Microsoft Excel Level 3 data analysis course, which assures you fully understand Pivot Tables and data summaries.

The ideal participant would be in a job position that requires data analysis and/or data preparation. This person would be a daily user of Excel and has been tasked to move beyond Excel’s capabilities.
