Campus Wide Pressurized Irrigation

  • Project Number: DPW19-193
  • Project Manager: CJ Vargas cjvargas@boisestate.edu
  • Start Date: July 2024
  • End Date: July 2025
  • Last Updated: 3-9-2025

Project Scope:

The south expansion zone of the university is bounded by University Drive and Beacon Street on the north and south edges, and by Denver Avenue and Oakland Avenue on the east and west. All of the properties owned by the university in this zone are currently being irrigated with domestic water provided by Suez Water.

The initial scope included the installation of a pumping station and pressure irrigation main line along Belmont Drive, between S Vermont Av and Denver Av. Additional scope includes asphalt and concrete repair as well as providing lateral connections to this main for any new, or previously developed, university irrigation systems in the zone.

The initial scope is expanded to replace the existing gravity irrigation line between Rossi Mill head gate and the pump station on the north side of the SUB/SPEC with a pressurized system. This entails eliminating the existing pump station and installing a 2000 GPM pump station at the Rossi Mill head gate and upsizing the existing 12″ pipes to 18″.

Project Update:

The work in Phase 1 is complete with the exception of some small items
such as tree and sod installs that have been postponed until warmer
weather comes next Spring. With that, Phase 2 is well under way and we
are allowing the contractor to work ahead and make progress on some
parts of Phase 3 also, especially while the weather holds.

Phase 2 work encompasses the removal of the existing pump structure
behind the SUB, the excavation for and construction of a new one near Big Jud’s and the sleeving of a pipe from the new pump location to in front of the Children’s Center where the contractor previously ran the pipe to, earlier this Summer. A little bit of work will occur at Honors College to remove the small pump structure located there as it will not be needed going forward.

Phase 3 work includes taking the pipework from where we left off at the
Michigan crossing, heading alongside Norco, turning North, heading
towards University between the Rec Center and MCMR, crossing
University, heading partially around Bronco Circle and then over to behind the SUB to connect with the rest of the campus irrigation system.

Work Completed:

Phase 1:

  • Oakland Ave. stretch
  • Belmont Crossing
  • Belmont stretch between Oakland and Michigan
  • Lincoln Crossing
  • Michigan Crossing
  • Children’s Center

Phase 2:

  • 100% of the existing Pump Station has been demo’d
  • 100% of the excavation has occurred for the new pump station.
  • 100% of the sleeving work is completed between the Children’s Center and the new pump station location on Protest Rd.
  • 100% Idaho Power Coordination
  • 100% of the concrete has been poured back in front of NORCO.
  • 100% of the new pump station structure and pumps have been installed.
  • 10% of the pump station programming has been completed.

Phase 3:

  • 100% of the excavation between MCMR and the Rec Center has
    been completed.
  • 100% of the concrete placed on the pathway between MCMR and
    the Rec Center.
  • 100% of the Vermont Crossing Pipe is installed.
  • 100% of the excavation work along NORCO is complete.
  • 100% of the pipe has been installed in the Intramural Field.
  • 100% of the Vermont / Belmont intersection has been prepared for concrete.
  • 80% of the concrete has been placed on the North side of NORCO and the intersection.
  • 60% of the University Crossing has been made – pipe installed. Backfilling and asphalt prep to follow this upcoming week.

Work in Progress:

  • Concrete pouring this week (March 10 / 11) in the Belmont / Vermont intersection.
  • University Dr. crossing is 60% complete. The pipe is connected from where they left off in front of the Rec Center back in December and is now most of the way across University Dr. Work will continue throughout this upcoming week and if all goes as planned, we may be able to pave University Dr. back late this upcoming week.
  • Excavation is occurring on the North side of the SUB to support a new manhole being installed. This work will also include tying into the newly laid underground infrastructure at the Intramural Field.
  • The new pump station structure and pumps have been installed. Testing and programming will now take place.

Notice of Impacts:

  • Vehicular Detour and Pedestrian Detour: Vermont / Belmont intersection.
  • Vehicular and Pedestrian Detour: University Dr. between Bronco Circle and Manitou.
  • Bronco Ln. will be partially closed starting on March 3rd and will extend through March 27th.
  • Norco and the Outdoor Center will encounter noise and minor pedestrian detours – all building entrances will remain open and accessible.
  • The crossing at university, which is the last piece of Ph. 3 in order for Campus to be watered come April, will occur in mid-March. This will close University between Bronco Ln. on the West end and Manitou on the East end. The closure will be for approximately three full weeks.
  • Work is to occur at the location of the old pump station behind the SUB beginning on Monday, March 3rd. The existing manhole is to be removed and a new, larger one will be put in its place.
  • There will be a short power shutdown affecting the connector and telecom room in the SUB sometime in the next two weeks. We are still working to schedule that for a time that will be least impactful to the building occupants.
