Yessica De La Torre Chooses Social Work to Make a Difference

Yessica De La Torre, a graduate of Boise State University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) Online aims to use her degree to make a difference in her community. De La Torre works at the Human Services Agency in San Joaquin County, California, but aims to do more with her master’s degree.

For De La Torre, Boise State’s MSW Online was a great way to build on her existing background in social work.

“I love how the program gives you options like advanced standing, allows you to be full-time or part-time and how affordable it is. The staff, professors and faculty in general are supportive and make the whole process easy. I believe that they want to see you succeed and will give you whatever you need to get there.

“Faculty, instructors, even our field placement — everyone was really supportive throughout the whole process. If I had any questions, they were quick to reply. Everyone was really friendly and made the process super easy.”

Connection to the field of social work

De La Torre enjoyed the Master of Social Work Online because of how seamlessly the theories she learned in class translated into practical field work, making lessons feel both engaging and directly applicable to her real-world experiences.

“I feel like the coursework really aligned with the practicum. We learned a lot about the theoretical framework of the therapy modalities and aligned with the work that I was doing in practicum. I came prepared to learn and actually apply what I was learning in class to the field.

“I was initially really nervous about finding placement, but luckily the staff and faculty were very supportive. They gave me the option to find my own placement, which turned out really great because I had a great experience at my placement.”

Overall, the connection with other students was what De La Torre loved most about the program.

“My favorite part about the program was the seminar that comes along with practicum because it gave us a chance to talk to our classmates. Since we are online, we don’t get to meet in person, but it gave us an opportunity to meet each other and to give each other feedback and support throughout the process.”

Preparation for future career

The professional development gained through the program prepared De La Torre for success in her future career.

“Boise State’s MSW Online really prepared me for my future career as a social worker. After graduation, I plan on pursuing an LCSW.

“The coursework really aligns with what is expected of a master’s level social worker, and it helped me land a job right after graduation.”
