Online radiology programs: Choosing the right one

Whether you are an experienced medical imaging professional or new to the field, earning a bachelor’s degree can increase your knowledge and lay the groundwork to enhance and advance your career. Boise State University’s online Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging and online Bachelor of Science in Imaging Sciences offer the same quality education with helping you achieve your goals in mind.

So, which of the online radiology programs is the right one for you? There are several factors to consider in choosing the best fit, including your previous college and work experience. Both programs are well-respected in the medical imaging field.

Online Bachelor of Science in Imaging Sciences

The biggest difference between the two programs is clinicals, which this one does not require because it does not lead to an additional credential. It is also an associate to bachelor’s degree completion program.

You should have already completed an associate degree (Associate of Science, Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science) from an accredited college or university prior to enrollment. You should also be a credentialed imaging professional in good standing.

The rapid pace of the program, which includes seven-week courses, allows you to complete your bachelor’s degree in as few as 12 months.

You will build on your professional knowledge and skills and walk away with many valuable learning outcomes, including:

  • Promote a safe environment for the patient, yourself and others through useful patient education, contributing your perspective and recognizing your overall inter-professional and social impact on patient outcomes.
  • Apply effective, appropriate and respectful communication with diverse patient populations, peers and your community to improve patient outcomes.
  • Display ethical practice as a professional technologist from a legal, compliance and systems perspective across the healthcare field.
  • Be part of an interprofessional team to decrease patient risk, identify solutions to complex issues and improve communication.
  • Analyze resources and advance research to promote life-long learning and knowledge sharing.
  •  Use critical thinking and decision-making strategies to leverage technology and improve quality and efficiencies.

Online Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging

As a student in this program, you will gain valuable hands-on clinical experience from experienced professionals in your area, helping you bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application.

The online Bachelor of Science in Advanced Medical Imaging also offers modalities to tailor your degree to your area of interest and goals. You must choose a modality to complete the program. Those options are:

  • Computed Tomography: Learn the core principles of computed tomography and qualify to sit for the ARRT (CT) exam.
  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography: Gain knowledge of sonographic physics and instrumentation, abdominal and obstetrics/gynecology sonography and doppler procedures and qualify to sit for the RDMS or ARRT (S) exams.
  • Interventional Cardiology: Find out how to monitor, scrub and circulate interventional cardiac procedures and qualify to sit for ARRT Cardiac-Interventional (CI) credentialing exam and/or the CCI RCIS exam.
  • Interventional Radiology: Learn to monitor, scrub and circulate procedures and qualify to sit for ARRT Vascular- Interventional (VI) credentialing exam.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Acquire knowledge of the field through practical experience and qualify to sit for the ARRT (MR) exam.

No matter which of these online radiology programs you choose, you will receive a high-quality education taught within a flexible and supportive learning environment. With the online format, you can continue to work while earning a degree, giving your education immediate applicability.
