First-generation student, Jazlyn Olmedo, recently graduated with her Master of Science in Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning.
Olmedo’s educational accomplishments include scholarly research translating to a culminating project, recipient of the Dean’s Graduate Fellowship and recipient of the Professional Growth Award.
Olmedo started the master’s program in fall 2020 and immediately began building on the foundation she had from her business degree. With a keen interest in human performance improvement, the Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning program was a perfect fit. She dove into the program with great enthusiasm and, although she had never conducted qualitative research or used collaboration tools to support a virtual research team, she was able to develop those skills through coursework. With her new knowledge, she managed a team of professors, staff and undergraduate students, and with faculty member Vicki Stieha, began putting theory into practice.
The Dean’s Graduate Fellowship funds graduate assistantships across select departments each year with the purpose of recruiting students from traditionally underrepresented communities. Boise State gave this fellowship opportunity to the Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning department for the 2020-2021 academic year. With Olmedo’s academic focus and dedication, she was deservingly awarded the fellowship.
During her time in the program, Olmedo, with faculty member Stieha, presented their research “The Journey to Mattering: It doesn’t end at Belonging.” During the presentation about mattering and belonging, Stieha shared that “Jazlyn demonstrated a remarkable ability to translate research from the university setting and to apply it in her role as a senior people services leader and inclusion council chairwoman at a local, fast-growing online beauty startup, Red Aspen.”
For the work she accomplished during her study, Olmedo was selected to receive the department’s Professional Growth Award. This is awarded to a student that entered the Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning program as a brand-new practitioner in related fields and then exhibited considerable growth over the duration of their studies.
Olmedo walked in the commencement ceremony on May 6, 2023, and joined the growing ranks of Latinx graduate degree recipients.
