When you start the Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning (OPWL) graduate study you join a larger community of practice and by extension have access to the members and the expertise they bring and share.
That’s what OPWL student Hailey Gordon discovered when she began her MS in OWPL studies in fall 2020. She wasn’t working in the learning and development field at the time and wanted to enroll in classes that were going to increase her marketability in instructional design and elearning development. She enrolled in our foundation class, principles of adult learning and rapid elearning development and immersed herself in studies while seeking job opportunities.
In early October, she applied for an e-learning developer position and was selected for an interview. It was a position she desired and with an organization she loved and in her preparation realized that to get this job she needed help. She was nearly 8-weeks into her study and decided to reach out to her foundation instructor Dr. Stieha. She replied the same day, had experience assisting others with interviews, and knew just what she needed. Together Hailey and Dr. Stieha identified material she should review and be familiar with and material to which she should be able to speak.
As Hailey further prepared she discovered interview areas in elearning development which she could improve so she reached out to her rapid e-learning development instructor Dr. Giacumo. She too quickly responded and together Hailey and Dr. Giacumo reviewed the materials being requested and discussed a variety of questions and how best to answer.
The additional materials and the help with preparing was the difference maker and Hailey was offered the e-learner developer position before she completed her first semester of study! She is working remotely while she continues her MS in OPWL studies because who knows what opportunities her second semester may bring!
