What is interventional radiology?

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that utilizes imaging techniques to guide minimally invasive procedures. These procedures diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, often reducing the need for traditional surgery.

Technologists in this field are an important part of a medical team caring for patients as they perform diagnostic imaging examinations on patients.

Interventional radiology vs. diagnostic radiology

While both interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology rely on imaging technologies, their purposes differ. Interventional radiology involves performing procedures like biopsies, catheterizations and angiograms to treat conditions. On the other hand, diagnostic radiology focuses on identifying diseases and injuries through imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRIs and CT scans.

An interventional radiology technologist assists physicians with minimally invasive, image-guided vascular procedures, including angioplasty, stenting, thrombolysis and more. Using sophisticated fluoroscopic equipment, technologists are responsible for capturing images of the blood vessels.

Career outlook for technologists

The demand for interventional radiology technologists is on the rise due to the increasing preference for minimally invasive procedures. More technologists will be needed to perform the imaging exams essential to patient care. As a result, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 6% growth by 2033 for radiologic technologists with an average hourly wage of $36.55.
