A guide to MSW degrees and social work careers

Earning a master’s degree in social work can open the door to a variety of opportunities across the field, giving you multiple career options as a graduate.

Boise State University’s Master of Social Work Online (MSW) prepares you to make the most of your advanced degree by developing technical skills and networking while gaining hands-on experience.

As a social worker, you have the chance to cultivate strong relationships through trust, empathy and transparency. Some of the potential career opportunities for holders of MSW degrees include:

  •       Addictions counselor
  •       Behavioral health consultant
  •       Clinical therapist
  •       Family advocacy representative
  •       Guidance counselor
  •       Non-profit manager
  •       Substance abuse counselor
  •       Victim advocate

Boise State’s MSW Online prepares you for any social work role, ranging from personal one-on-one counseling to non-profit leadership. It also offers both a Regular Program MSW and an Advanced Standing MSW.

The Regular Program MSW is for students with a bachelor’s degree in disciplines other than social work, while the Advanced Standing MSW is designed for students who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an undergraduate social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Boise State’s MSW Online is also accredited by CSWE, which indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of program quality evaluated through a peer review process.

Ninety-four percent of the graduates of the program from 2022-23 report that their work is related to their degree and their career goals. That group of graduates also reports working for the Department of Social Services, local/county state health departments, hospitals and treatment centers.

Bang for your buck

The program is also recognized for its value. With no out-of-state tuition, 100% online coursework and licensing pass rates that exceed the national average by 10%, Boise State’s MSW Online can help you reach your goals without leaving your community.

Boise State is also listed as one of the Best Master’s in Social Work Online Programs in 2024 by OnlineMastersDegrees.org, a national ranking body that uses the U.S. Department of Education data, which analyzed more than 7,700 schools to create an algorithm to rank 70 unique master’s degree subjects.

Boise State’s program was ranked No. 10 in the nation for best affordable MSW Online programs by Best Value Schools.

The program has also been named as one of the nation’s best schools for online degrees and certificates in the healthcare field going into 2024 by EduMed.org. Just 6% of accredited colleges and universities earned a ranking position.

Grand achievement

Boise State’s MSW Online celebrated its 1,000th graduate in December 2023. Program Director Jennifer Obenshain is excited about the accomplishment.

“Reaching the milestone of graduating 1,000 students is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, faculty and the program as a whole,” she said. “It reflects our commitment to producing well-prepared social workers who can serve their communities and make meaningful impacts on the lives of those they serve.”

Recent graduates are enjoying success stories as a result of earning their online MSW degrees at Boise State.

“I wanted employment flexibility and higher earning potential,” said May 2024 graduate Shannon Easley. “Changes with Medicaid and case management funding were impacting the services I could provide my clients. An MSW allows me to continue supporting the community I love. Providing therapy for adults and adolescents speaks to me.”

Added December 2023 graduate Maggie Butler: “The MSW gives you not just a broad understanding of social work, but it opens that door to be able to tap into different sectors within the social work realm.”

Will your MSW Online success story be the next one?
