Software must be compatible with University administrative systems. If the current version is within the manufacturer’s supported product lifecycle, all software must also be fully licensed and supported. Operating systems must be regularly updated and within the manufacturer’s supported product lifecycle.
Desktop Standards
Windows 10 (Version 23H2 build 19045 and newer) is supported until the summer of 2025.
Windows 11 (Version 23H2 build 22621) Enterprise versions are the currently supported Microsoft operating systems.
Apple macOS 13 (Ventura), and 14 (Sonoma) are supported operating systems on Apple Macintosh computers. Apple regularly releases upgrades for macOS which address stability and performance issues. Technical support staff may recommend upgrading to the current version as a first step to resolving known issues with earlier releases of macOS.
Apple or Windows-based computers must be under warranty and within the dates of the manufacturer’s supported lifespan.
Machine Standards
Computers purchased for all purposes should be enterprise models offered by contracted vendors. Desktops and laptops manufactured primarily for “home” or “small business” are not permissible.
University computers and mobile devices are department expenses. Departments are responsible for initial purchase, regular replacements and cost of out of warranty repairs.
Mobile Computing Devices
The Office of Information Technology supports Google Workspace applications and solutions providing real-time device connectivity and synchronization.
Preferred Vendors
The State of Idaho requires Boise State University to order computers from contracted vendors. All orders are facilitated by OIT. Purchasing a computer with a P-Card will lead to revocation of P-Card privileges. These standards apply to all acquisitions independent of acquisition method or funding source, e.g., grants, donations, rental or leases, etc.
Preferred and Contracted Vendors
Minimum Recommended Windows Hardware
- 16 GB of memory (RAM)
- Minimum 512 GB SSD hard drive
- A processor with TPM and vPRO enabled
Minimum Recommended Mac Hardware
- 16 GB of memory (RAM)
- Minimum 512 GB SSD hard drive
Backups
Backups of data stored on a client computer is the responsibility of the department. All files created or revised each day should be backed up if those files are stored on a local drive. Users should also ensure weekly backups of all files. It is recommended to use Google Drive. Mission-critical data must be stored on University network file servers or Google Drive cloud storage vendors. Other cloud storage vendors are not permitted.
Disposal
Upon university completion of use, all electronic storage will be erased using either DOD zero fill standards, magnetron, or device destruction. This is handled by making a request to facilities and they contract with a 3rd party. Hardware will be disposed of in accordance with Boise State and State of Idaho policy and procedures.
