Campus Wireless Issues First Week of Fall Semester

The Office of Information Technology sincerely apologizes for the significant wireless network disruptions that occurred during the first week of classes this semester.

The issue stemmed from problems with our wireless controllers, which manage the network for different areas of the campus. Although these systems had been operating smoothly since their installation in 2023, the increased demand at the start of the semester revealed unexpected vulnerabilities.

Over the summer, we made updates to our network by migrating our wireless access points to these controllers. Unfortunately, the system failed under the heavier load, leading to widespread connectivity issues. In response, we took immediate action to redirect the network load, but the problems continued.

We have since worked closely with Cisco, our network provider, to update our wireless system’s design and software. These changes have stabilized the network, and we are confident in its reliability moving forward.

We know how crucial a stable wireless network is for your teaching, learning, and work, and we regret the stress and disruption this outage caused. Please rest assured that we are committed to preventing such issues in the future and are taking all necessary steps to ensure the stability of our campus network.
