April Howell, DNP, RN, joined the School of Nursing in 2021 as a clinical assistant professor. Dr. Howell has extensive nursing leadership experience and is a motivational mentor who prioritizes relationship building and creative problem-solving. Her clinical experience has been in the ambulatory setting, including family medicine and neuroscience.

Dr. Howell received her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Grand Canyon University, where her doctoral project focused on the impact of a structured telephone communication on the patient no-show rate in a specialty outpatient clinic. Dr. Howell received her Master of Science in Nursing, with an emphasis in leadership in healthcare systems, from Grand Canyon University. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boise State University and an Associate of Science in Nursing from Idaho State University.

Dr. Howell’s practice interests are focused on nursing leadership and the role that plays in providing quality patient care and overcoming challenges such as health literacy. In addition, she supports student-centered quality education outside of the classroom during “real world” experiences.

Dr. Howell is a native of Idaho and grew up in the Treasure Valley. She enjoys everything outdoors and appreciates all that Idaho has to offer.
