Google Hangouts Chat is a new messaging and collaboration app available to Boise State students, faculty and staff. Hangouts Chat is a messaging platform primarily built for teams and groups, although it also can be used to message others one-to-one.
With Hangouts Chat, you can upload items from Google Drive, collaborate on Google Docs, Sheets and Slides and do group video chats in Hangouts Meet.
Twenty-eight languages currently are supported in Hangouts Chat, and each chat room can have up to 8,000 participants.
“Bots” are featured in Hangouts Chats. The @Meet bot interacts with Google Calendar to schedule meetings and events, while the @Drive bot notifies you if a file is shared, comments are added or if others request access to documents.
Hangouts Chat is available for iOS, Android and the web. On the web, visit chat.google.com. Or, download the app for your desktop or smartphone.
Information on how to use Hangouts Chat is available through the G Suite Learning Center on Google’s website. You also can download the Hangouts Chat Cheat Sheet for a quick reference guide to create chatrooms, send group messages and use Google Drive files in chat.
