Mariah Devereux Herbeck presented her paper, “From Page to Screen: The Silencing of the French Female Concierge,” at the Women in French International Conference: Le Bruit des Femmes. The conference was held in Tallahassee, Florida, Feb. 8-10.
In her paper, Devereux Herbeck analyzed the role of the female concierge’s voice in 20th-century French literature and her subsequent absence in filmic adaptations of the same century, all the while exploring the broader cultural implications of her silencing in contemporary French society.
