Mark Cowan, director of the Master of Accountancy – Taxation program and professor, and JoAnn Wood, a lecturer in the accounting department, were published in the Journal of Accountancy. Their paper, “Using Podcasting to Attract Accounting Talent,” explores how innovative approaches like podcasts can enhance the appeal of accounting to a broader audience.

The article highlights how Cowan and Wood launched a podcast series, Journeys of Accounting, to attract new talent to the accounting profession. The podcast aims to make the field more relatable and engaging for students, potentially increasing interest in accounting careers. To achieve this, Cowan and Wood showcase diverse career paths within accounting by featuring professionals from unique backgrounds, including former NFL players, members of the gaming industry and a former pilot.

“The personal and professional details of the interviewees are attention grabbers for a larger purpose: the podcasts are a creative way to attract more talent to the profession,” wrote Cowan and Wood.

The podcast began in 2023, with the first episodes recorded in August of that same year. During the Fall 2023 semester, Boise State students enrolled in introductory accounting courses were assigned to listen to the podcast. Student feedback indicated a greater appreciation for the importance of accounting and led to increased enrollment in subsequent courses.
