Last February, IdahoRID (Registry Interpreters for the Deaf) provided a workshop focused on note-taking skills for American Sign Language interpreters. This specialized training was led by Fátima Cornwall, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of World Languages, and Chris Dimmick, both master-level certified court interpreters.
Their expertise in court settings brought a unique and practical perspective to the workshop, emphasizing the critical role of effective note-taking in maintaining the accuracy of interpreted communication. The workshop aimed to equip interpreters with strategies and techniques to enhance their note-taking abilities, ultimately supporting more precise and reliable interpretations.
More than 100 participants from around the country registered for the event.
“This was a very unique workshop for us ASL/English interpreters. I could see how I will be able to apply this practice to my work. It brought a new perspective to my processing, working with a team, and how I could take notes during an assignment,” said one event participant.
