Scarritt, Kreiter and students publish on perceptions of social democratic programs

Arthur Scarritt (chair and professor, Department of Sociology), Michael Kreiter (lecturer, Department of Sociology) and sociology undergraduate students Amelia Jobe and Danilla Kowalczuk published a brief article titled “Why Conservatives Embrace Social Democracy” in Contexts, a quarterly magazine that communicates cutting-edge sociology research to a general audience.

Universal programs like fully government funded childcare, family leave and health care as are usually viewed as extremely leftist. However, the authors found that conservatives saw these social democratic programs as legitimate means to serve the complex problems in their lives and to forward core conservative priorities.
