In Spring 2025, the Center for Teaching and Learning is offering a variety of opportunities for educators to engage with each other, including a faculty learning community, a book circle and a workshop series.
Community-Engagement and Service-Learning Faculty Learning Communities
Explore how to bring experiential learning and community engagement into teaching through one of three faculty learning community options starting in January. Each format provides tools and guidance to help faculty develop and refine community engagement in their courses, integrate essential practices and build meaningful community partnerships. Participants are eligible for a stipend. Stipends are offered for each of these opportunities and faculty can choose the format that fits their goals:
- In-person Service-Learning Faculty Learning Community – 12 hours over 12 weeks
- Online Service-Learning Academy – 12 hours over 12 weeks
- Community Engagement Academy – 12 hours over 2 weeks (intensive)*
*The Community Engagement Academy offers similar strategies to service-learning through a community-based experiential learning approach, though “community engagement” encompasses a broader range of activities that may not include service.
The Present Professor Book Circle
Applications are open for a spring book circle on the new book “The Present Professor.” In a world where stress is unavoidable, this timely book offers much-needed guidance for cutting through the emotional static that can hold teachers back. A specialist in pedagogical strategies with extensive classroom experience, author Elizabeth A. Norell explains how an educator’s presence, or authenticity, can be critical to creating transformational spaces for students. Presenting the research on how and why such inner work unlocks transformational learning, the book equips educators with the tools for crafting a more authentic presence in their teaching work.
There are two possible sections for the book club: Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon via Zoom, or Wednesdays from 2-3 p.m. in person. Participants will be provided with a free copy of the book (hard copy or electronic). Fill out the application to join.
Talking Teaching Adjunct Series
This hybrid workshop series is for new or seasoned adjunct instructors. It will teach tips and strategies concerning frequently inquired teaching topics, engage in dialogue with other adjunct faculty, and connect with teaching resources across campus. Session topics include:
- Talking Teaching Adjunct Series: Getting the most out of Canvas for in-person classes
- Talking Teaching Adjunct Series: Assessing and demonstrating your student’s learning
- Talking Teaching Adjunct Series: Reflective teaching
- Talking Teaching Adjunct Series: Simple course design strategies
Members of Boise State’s adjunct faculty will present during the interactive sessions. Participants may attend all or selected workshops in the series. This series is geared toward adjunct instructors, but all educators are welcome.
